Description: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Inventory of Dams (NID). A dam is included in the National Inventory of Dams if: (1) it is a High or Significant hazard potential class dam or, (2) it is a Low Hazard potential class dam that exceeds 25 feet in height AND 15 acre-feet storage or, 3) it is a Low Hazard potential class dam that exceeds 50 acre-feet storage AND 6 feet height. For definitions of hazard, height and storage, please see the data dictionary. In 1986 Congress enacted the Water Resources Development Act (P.L 99-662). This legislation authorized the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to maintain and periodically update the National Inventory of Dams, and appropriated funds for that purpose. This GIS coverage was created by extracting dams from the 75,187 dams cataloged in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Inventory of Dams. NID coverage currentness is October 2000.Supplemental InformationOn-line linkage: National Inventory of Dams.It was downloaded from the West Virginia GIS Technical Center Data Clearing House in July 2011 by the WVDOH GTI Section.

Description: The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies and the approximate shorelines of the Great Lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee. The coordinate system is UTM Zone 17(NAD83).Data as of October 2018

Description: Major water bodies intended for use in making statewide cartographic maps. Line and polygon coverages derived from the USGS National Hydrological Dataset (NHD) and Digital Line Graphs (DLG). Compiled and edited by the WV GIS Technical Center. Both the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) are used to represent surface water on the National Map (http://nhd.usgs.gov/). The USGS is the primary steward for NHD, while the NRCS is the principal steward for WBD.Data taken during the period from October 2017 to September 2018.Scale 1:100000, Extent StatewideCoordinate System Lat/Long (NAD 83) and UTM Zone 17 (NAD 83)File Format Compressed ESRI line and polygon shapefiles
