Description: The United States Geological Survey [USGS] Geographic Names Information System [GNIS] has been developed as the source for geographic names data in use by all departments of the Federal Government. It contains information about physical and cultural features located within the United States, associated areas and Antarctica. In this dataset, point features for all public and private schools within the state of West Virginia were updated, adding new features and designating closed features as "historical". These updated point features were collected utilizing information from the following data sources: the West Virginia Department of Education [WVDE] and their proprietary online Education Directory, The West Virginia National Guard, West Virginia County Boards of Education, West Virginia Christian Education Association, West Virginia Division of Juvenile Services, and listings found via internet search engines. The WVDE provided a tabular listing of open and recently closed schools via Randall Kirk, West Virginia Education Information System Office, which was used in conjunction with the WVDE Online Education Directory [http://wvde.state.wv.us/ed_directory/] to produce a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of known schools within West Virginia. GPS coordinates collected in 2004 by the National Guard as a part of the Counter Drug Task Force for most elementary schools in West Virginia were used in conjunction with the WVDE data. Incomplete or unclear data were supplemented with information from individual County Boards of Education, the West Virginia Christian Education Association, and West Virginia Division of Juvenile Services. Google Street View, Google Maps, Microsoft Bing Pictometry Oblique Imagery, telephone interviews and local knowledge were used as validation sources for school locations. The SAMB 2003 (2 foot spatial-resolution, natural color) and the NAIP 2009 (1 meter spatial-resolution natural color) orthophotography were used as base layers to aid in accurately locating features and identifying relative coordinates. Many of the updated features acquired through the WVDE were located using the WV Statewide Addressing and Mapping Geocoding service.Complete listing of 803 PK - 12 grade schools in West Virginia. There are approximately 74 Private Schools and 729 Public Schools. The West Virginia GIS Technical Center used data in conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to update the statewide schools dataset. The GIS file was created and published by the WVGISTC in July of 2015 and is available via an online web application ( West Virginia School PreK-12 ).Supplemental InformationContact Information: Randall Kirk, Programmer/Analyst, West Virginia Department of Education (WV DE), WV Education Information System (WVEIS), Bldg 6 Rm 346, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, WV 25305, Phone: 558-3927 x468, Fax: 558-2584, E-mail: rnkirk@access.k12.wv.us

Description: This dataset was developed by a contractor to the federal government as part of the HSIP Freedom project. The published metadata describes the dataset as such:Law Enforcement LocationsAny location where sworn officers of a law enforcement agency are regularly based or stationed. Law Enforcement agencies "are publicly funded and employ at least one full-time or part-time sworn officer with general arrest powers". This is the definition used by the US Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ-BJS) for their Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey. Although LEMAS only includes non Federal Agencies, this dataset includes locations for federal, state, local, and special jurisdiction law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement agencies include, but are not limited to, municipal police, county sheriffs, state police, school police, park police, railroad police, federal law enforcement agencies, departments within non law enforcement federal agencies charged with law enforcement (e.g., US Postal Inspectors), and cross jurisdictional authorities (e.g., Port Authority Police).Supplemental InformationPlease see the full metadata for complete information. This dataset was derived using several previously published datasets. Those datasets were created by several agencies including the West Virginia GIS Technical Center and the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. More information about HSIP Freedom is available in this white paper and by visiting the DHS National Infrastructure Protection Plan webpage.
