Description: The purpose of this project was to update and make additions to the current educational facility listings within the Geographic Names Information System [GNIS] for the state of West Virginia. To accomplish this goal, the West Virginia GIS Technical Center at West Virginia University [WVGISTC] worked in coordination with partners at the federal, state, and local levels. The project compiled the most current feature information from the WVDE, as well as utilized validation tools, interviews and local knowledge to ensure the accuracy of the submitted GNIS information. This project tasked the WVGISTC with updates and validation of geographic names for cultural features with prior or current use as an educational facility. Both private and public schools that were not a part of the current database or whose status has changed since last update were included in this new dataset. This project supports an ongoing activity for the state of West Virginia by updating the GNIS with certain cultural features complementary to the existing Homeland Security Infrastructure Program [HSIP] and USGS Structures and Transportation update process.

Description: This dataset was developed by a contractor to the federal government as part of the HSIP Freedom project. The published metadata describes the dataset as such:Law Enforcement LocationsAny location where sworn officers of a law enforcement agency are regularly based or stationed. Law Enforcement agencies "are publicly funded and employ at least one full-time or part-time sworn officer with general arrest powers". This is the definition used by the US Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ-BJS) for their Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey. Although LEMAS only includes non Federal Agencies, this dataset includes locations for federal, state, local, and special jurisdiction law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement agencies include, but are not limited to, municipal police, county sheriffs, state police, school police, park police, railroad police, federal law enforcement agencies, departments within non law enforcement federal agencies charged with law enforcement (e.g., US Postal Inspectors), and cross jurisdictional authorities (e.g., Port Authority Police).Supplemental InformationPlease see the full metadata for complete information.
